Student Bursaries

The healthcare sector, like many other sectors, has a history of systemic anti-black racism that has resulted in underrepresentation and disparities in access to education and employment opportunities for Blacks and other underserved populations. Giving out bursaries to nursing students is one way that JCAN honours the original founders of the organization (Jamaican-born nurses). In addition, JCAN awards annual bursaries to nursing students enrolled in a Canadian academic nursing institution. To qualify, students must demonstrate academic achievement and a financial need.

Goals of the Student Bursaries Program:

  • Increase diversity in the nursing workforce – a more diverse nursing workforce leads to better health outcomes for patients, especially those from underrepresented communities.

  • Support education and career development – giving out bursaries to black students can help alleviate some of the financial barriers.

  • Investing in the future of healthcare – Black nursing students bring unique perspectives and experiences to the healthcare field that can help improve health outcomes for Black patients and promote greater cultural competence in healthcare.
