In honour of Black History Month, JCAN Health Promotion Services partnered with the Place of Praise Cultural Centre to host Movement of the People, a powerful cultural gathering recognizing the trailblazers who paved the way for Black communities while celebrating the vibrancy, resilience, and richness of Black culture today. The event was held on February 14th at the Place of Praise Cultural Centre in Scarborough
Black History Month invites reflection, learning, and celebration. It is a time to acknowledge the contributions, struggles, achievements, and leadership of Black individuals and communities whose impact continues to shape our society. Movement of the People was created as a space for remembrance, cultural pride, and community connection.
Honouring Those Who Paved the Way
The evening paid tribute to generations of leaders, activists, artists, and community builders whose courage and determination created pathways toward equity and opportunity. Through shared reflections and storytelling, attendees were reminded that progress is rooted in collective action and community strength.
Celebrating Culture, Identity, and Community
The event came alive through music, movement, and cultural expression, highlighting the beauty and diversity of Black heritage. Participants experienced moments of joy, connection, and cultural pride, reinforcing the importance of preserving traditions while uplifting future generations. Gatherings like Movement of the People strengthen social bonds, foster belonging, and create spaces where identity and heritage are honoured. They also serve as reminders that cultural celebration is essential to community wellness and collective healing.
A Shared Commitment to Equity and Recognition
We were honoured to be joined by MPP Myers, whose presence reinforced the importance of recognizing Black history and supporting initiatives that celebrate diversity, inclusion, and community empowerment.
“As I looked around the room, I saw more than a celebration , I saw stories, resilience, and generations of strength carried forward in every drumbeat, every movement, and every shared smile. This gathering reminded me that our history lives within us, and when we come together in community, we honour our ancestors while creating a stronger sense of belonging for those who will follow.”
Dr. Claudette Holloway, Executive Director, JCAN Health Promotion Services
"Events like this reflect JCAN’s ongoing commitment to advancing equity, promoting social connection, and supporting culturally meaningful programming that uplifts and strengthens our communities."
Dennis Isaacs, Social Connect for Seniors Lead
