Today, on National Seniors Day, we celebrate the wisdom, resilience, and contributions of older adults in our community. At JCAN Health Promotion Services, we believe seniors are not only valued members of society; they are also pillars of strength who inspire us every day.

Spotlight: Ms. Carmen Brown

This year, we shine a special spotlight on Ms. Carmen Brown, the oldest and one of the most cherished members of JCAN, who will be celebrating her 94th birthday on November 2nd.

Ms. Brown’s life story is one of perseverance through adversity. She built a career as the manager of the cafeteria at General Motors in Scarborough, while raising a family and staying deeply rooted in her community. She has faced challenges with grace and resilience, always emerging stronger and more determined to give back.

Today, she continues to live with purpose and joy. Every week, Ms. Brown logs in faithfully to JCAN’s Social Connect for Seniors program via Zoom, never missing an opportunity to engage with her peers. “JCAN keeps me going,” she shares. “I look forward to every session, because it feels like family.”

Embracing Technology at 94

One of the qualities that makes Ms. Brown so remarkable is her openness to change. She has fully embraced technology, showing that age is no barrier to learning or connecting in new ways. For years, she has had her own email address, iPhone, and iPad, and today she enjoys using her Apple Watch. She stays active on Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook, and keeps up to date by reading many Jamaican newspapers online. Ms. Brown’s enthusiasm for new tools and platforms is an inspiration to all generations—proof that a love of learning and adapting keeps us young at heart.

Why Social Connect Matters

Ms. Brown’s story reminds us of how important connection is, especially for seniors. Too often, older adults face loneliness and isolation, which can take a toll on both physical and emotional health. Programs like Social Connect create a lifeline, providing:

  • A welcoming community where seniors form lasting friendships.

  • Engaging activities that bring joy, laughter, and mental stimulation.

  • Access to resources that support health, independence, and wellness.

JCAN’s Commitment

At JCAN, we know that seniors like Ms. Brown carry a lifetime of wisdom, resilience, and leadership. Our mission is to ensure they continue to thrive, feel supported, and stay connected. By investing in our seniors, we strengthen families, neighborhoods, and communities as a whole.

How You Can Help
