On the evening of July 31st, 2025, JCAN proudly led a memorable intergenerational excursion to the annual Freedom Train Ride. This special event commemorates Emancipation Day in Canada, and our seniors were excited to take part in an experience that celebrates culture, history, and unity. Our group traveled by chartered bus to Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station, where the Freedom Train journey began. Joining the seniors were a group of youth from our community, eager to take in the festivities and learn from those who came before them. Together, they stepped onto the train to embark on a powerful journey through memory, resistance, and celebration.

The Freedom Train Ride, hosted in partnership with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and local organizers, is held each year to mark August 1st, Emancipation Day. This day recognizes the Slavery Abolition Act of 1834, which ended slavery in the British Empire. The symbolic subway ride through Toronto serves as a living tribute to the Underground Railroad and the many who fought for freedom. As the train moved through the city, passengers were immersed in performances, music, spoken word, and storytelling. The train became more than just transportation. It became a moving space for cultural expression, reflection, and honouring the resilience of the Black community. For JCAN’s seniors, this trip was deeply meaningful. Many reflected on their own journeys and the strength of their ancestors. Sharing the experience with youth made it even more powerful. It was an opportunity for elders to pass on wisdom, and for youth to gain a deeper understanding of their roots.
