On Saturday, April 26, 2025 JCAN proudly hosted its first-ever Personal Support Worker (PSW) Appreciation Social at Burrow's Hall Community Centre in Scarborough, a joyful and affirming event dedicated to recognizing the essential contributions of PSWs in our communities.
The event was spearheaded by JCAN’s Membership Co-Chairs, Scherrie-Ann Richards and Dennis Isaacs, whose thoughtful planning and deep appreciation for PSWs created an atmosphere of warmth and connection.
Attendees were welcomed into a vibrant space filled with music, refreshments, wellness giveaways. The highlight of the afternoon came during a moving address by JCAN’s President, Jacqueline Chen, who emphasized the vital role PSWs play in our healthcare system and the importance of recognizing and supporting their work, not just in words, but through sustained action.
“This is a celebration, but it’s also a promise,” said Chen. “JCAN is committed to standing with PSWs, advocating for your well-being, and creating opportunities for you to connect, recharge, and thrive.”
For many PSWs, often working in high-pressure environments with limited visibility or recognition. The event was a meaningful moment of validation. Several attendees expressed that this was the first time their role had been acknowledged in a public, celebratory way.
This inaugural appreciation social is the first of many steps JCAN is taking to uplift and support PSWs. Upcoming initiatives will focus on wellness programming, peer support networks, and culturally grounded professional development.
To the PSWs who show up every day with care, compassion, and courage: thank you. We see you. We celebrate you.
