Celebrating Success and Compassion at the "Brunch for a Cause: Building Stronger Communities

Updated: Nov 13, 2023

On November 5, 2023, our community came together for a truly remarkable event, the "Brunch for a Cause: Building Stronger Communities," which left us inspired, deeply moved, and committed to the important work of JCAN. This extraordinary gathering, held at the Sts. Peter and Paul Banquet Hall in Scarborough, was a testament to the power of community, compassion, and the unwavering support of our cause.

Marc Trinidad: A Memorable Host

Our day began with the charismatic and talented host, Marc Trinidad, who set the stage for a day of camaraderie, laughter, and heartfelt moments. His exceptional hosting skills created an environment where everyone felt welcome, and united in the spirit of giving.

Jennifer Dockery's Inspiring Speech

One of the highlights of the brunch was the compelling speech delivered by Jennifer Dockery, General Manager of Seniors Services and Long Term Care. She passionately emphasized the importance of senior programming that promotes inclusivity and cultural relevance. Her words served as a poignant reminder of the significance of our mission.

MPP Andrea Hazell's Encouragement

We were privileged to have MPP Andrea Hazell among us, who greeted the participants and extended her heartfelt congratulations to JCAN for their invaluable work in the community. Her presence reinforced the importance of our mission and encouraged us to continue our efforts.

Welcoming New Directors

Jacqueline Chen, President of JCAN, introduced an impressive lineup of seven new Directors who were appointed to the Board at the Annual General Meeting. Israel Hunter, Dr. Crystal Garvey, Scherrie-Ann Richards, Agatha McPhee, Denyse Dawes, Dennis Isaacs, and Shayna Wedderburn bring their expertise and dedication to further our organization's mission. Special thanks were extended to Debra Williams, the Executive Secretary, and Dr. Era Mae Ferron, the Vice President, who will continue to serve their terms. Their commitment ensures essential continuity and leadership for JCAN. This stunning group would not be complete without the honourable mention of JCAN's Executive Director, Dr. Claudette Holloway, head of operations.

Dionne Wilson and Pianist: The Gift of Music

During the event, the audience was treated to the performances of vocalist Dionne Wilson and a talented pianist. Their harmonious melodies filled the room, reminding us of the power of music to uplift spirits and unite communities.

The Importance of Giving

The seniors of the Social Connect for Seniors program took to centre stage to deliver a heartfelt performance that left the participants feeling inspired and committed to JCANs cause. The "Brunch for a Cause" underscored the vital importance of giving. JCAN cannot thrive without the generous support of donors like you. Your contributions are the lifeblood of our organization, helping us to continue our vital work.

One of the most compelling reasons for continued giving was evident in the significant rise in senior attendance at the Social Connect for Seniors program. This growth demonstrates the imperative need for the program's continuation. We have already given our seniors a new lease on life, and now is not the time to stop.

Honoring Healthcare Leaders

During the event, we took a moment to recognize and applaud the healthcare leaders who have shown exceptional dedication and compassion in caring for our seniors. Congratulations to Clinical Assistants Yvette Farquharson and Everton Fearon of St. Michael's Hospital, and Valesta Trumpet of St. Joseph's Health Centre, our award recipients. Their remarkable contributions to senior care have left an indelible mark on our community, and they exemplify the impact one can make through kindness and dedication.

In closing, the success of "Brunch for a Cause" is a testament to the incredible strength and generosity of our community. Your unwavering support, the power of music, and the dedication of our healthcare leaders all emphasize the importance of giving. We have seen the tangible difference we can make in the lives of our seniors, and together, we can continue this remarkable journey.
