Spring Forward 2025

JCAN

Mar 13, 2025

Reflecting on a season of growth, community connection, and renewed dedication to Black wellness and leadership.

Spring Forward 2025

Dear JCAN Family,

March brings a time to reflect on how far we have come and the impact we continue to make. This year marks JCAN’s 10th anniversary, a decade of supporting one another, celebrating our cultural heritage, and strengthening our community.

February was filled with meaningful moments. We honored Black History Month, we reflected on the resilience and contributions of those who came before us, knowing that the work we do today is about paying it forward for future generations who need our support. Our Brunch for a Cause was a beautiful gathering of laughter, wisdom, and purpose. We were honored to hear from The Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine, who spoke about the importance of recognizing our seniors as “Elders” and preserving their wisdom for those who come after us.

One of the highlights was watching our seniors take to the dance floor for a coordinated line dance, reminding us that joy and movement have no age limit.

We remain committed to supporting nursing students at Toronto Metropolitan University, ensuring the next generation of healthcare professionals is equipped with the knowledge and cultural awareness to serve our communities.

To continue this vital work, we need your support. Fundraising is essential to sustaining our programs, and every contribution makes a difference in uplifting, educating, and strengthening our community. As JCAN continues to grow, so do our needs. In this issue, we share highlights from the Brunch for a Cause, celebrate International Women’s Day, and highlight the power of social connection.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we honor the past, support the present, and build a stronger future.

With gratitude, Jacqueline Chen, President, JCAN

Brunch for a Cause: Honoring Our Elders & Celebrating 10 Years of JCAN

This year’s Brunch for a Cause was more than just a gathering, it was a celebration of heritage, wisdom, and the power of community. Held in honor of Black History Month and JCAN’s 10th anniversary, the event brought together members from all generations for a morning filled with inspiration, music, and connection.

Hosted by the incomparable Marc Trinidad, the event was infused with laughter, energy, and a true sense of belonging. The morning was further elevated by special performances from the legendary Eddie Bullen and the dynamic Sisjagré Drummers, whose rhythms set the perfect tone for a joyous occasion.

We were deeply honored to have The Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine as our keynote speaker. A trailblazer and a passionate advocate, she spoke about the critical role that seniors in the Black community play as “Elders”, a term that carries deep significance.

“We must recognize our seniors not just as older adults but as Elders, the wisdom-keepers, the storytellers, and the pillars of our community,” she emphasized.

Dr. Augustine reminded us that in many cultures, Elders are the bridge between past and future, guiding younger generations with knowledge and lived experience. She urged us to seek their counsel, honor their stories, and ensure they remain central in decision-making spaces. Her words resonated deeply, reminding us why JCAN was founded...to create a community where all generations are valued and heard.

One of the most heartwarming moments of the event was when a group of our seniors from Social Connect took to the dance floor for a beautifully coordinated line dance routine. The energy, joy, and pure love of movement filled the room, reminding everyone that age is just a number when it comes to celebrating life. The performance energized the audience, brought laughter, and many participants eager to dance to their feet. What a beautiful way to mark our 10-year journey together!

It was another sold out JCAN event! The Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine takes a photo with JCANs student volunteers.

Talented Musicians Brought Life to the Event

Spotlight
Dr. Claudette Holloway a Pillar of Strength & Faith

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we would like to shine a special spotlight on Dr. Claudette Holloway, a pillar of strength, wisdom, hope and strong faith. She is JCANs Executive Director, RNAO’s 57th immediate past President, and she is known lovingly by the Social Connect seniors as “Sister Claudette”.

Dr. Holloway has long been an advocate for equity, inclusion, and community-driven healthcare, working tirelessly to uplift those around her. She has shaped policies, mentored future leaders, and she stands firm in her belief that every individual deserves dignity, care, and opportunity. Dr. Holloway is a force to reckoned with, a no-nonsense type of lady...in the nicest of ways of course.

Her presence at JCAN is nothing short of transformative. Whether leading discussions, encouraging young people, providing support...just when you need it, or simply sharing a warm smile, she embodies the values that make our community strong. This International Women’s Day, we celebrate Dr. Claudette Holloway and the countless women who, like her, continue to lead with courage, love, and unwavering dedication.

Dr. Holloway celebrated her 51st Anniversary with the hubby Pastor Holloway of the Place of Praise Cultural Centre. Congratulations to you both and thank you for your steadfast support of JCAN and the seniors!

JCAN Operations Department

Dear JCAN Family,

Every time I step into Social Connect, I am reminded of the incredible spirit of our seniors. They continue to thrive, sharing laughter, wisdom, and friendship while staying active and engaged. It has also been a joy to work alongside third-year nursing students from Toronto Metropolitan University, who have brought fresh energy and compassion to our space. Seeing the mutual learning and connection between our seniors and these future healthcare professionals has been truly inspiring.

As our membership grows, we are reaching capacity, a sign of our success, but also a reminder of our need for a permanent space where we can continue to expand. The relationships we are building, including the warm connections with the Toronto Police Service, who have become regular visitors, show just how important this program is to our community.

With that in mind, I invite you to join us as we embark on our fundraising season. In May, we kick off our Walkathon, an opportunity for everyone to step forward in support of JCAN. Then in June, we come together for our Annual Gala, a night of celebration and giving. These events are more than just fundraisers, they are steps toward securing a space of our own, a place where our seniors can continue to connect, learn, and thrive for years to come.

To our incredible volunteers, THANK YOU for your dedication and kindness. To our donors and supporters, your generosity makes all of this possible. Let’s walk, celebrate, and build JCAN’s future together!

With gratitude,

Dr. Claudette Holloway

Highlights From the Social Connect for Seniors Program

3rd Year Nursing Students Placements From TMU

JCAN is excited to welcome two third-year nursing students from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) to the Social Connect Weekly Program. This partnership offers the students valuable community-based experience from a public health perspective through a uniquely designed program registered with the Canadian Copyright Registry. The students play a key role in delivering essential health information on topics that matter most to seniors. We look forward to welcoming more students in September 2025. Special thanks to Jannette Hunter, RN, for assisting the JCAN Executive Director in ensuring a successful placement experience for the students.

Engagement with the Malvern
Police Liaison Services

Members of the Malvern police liaison services attend a portion fo Social Connect regularly and join in the activities which the seniors love. Visiting Social Connect is now a part of their orientation. In February 2025, Officer Christopher also conducted a presentation on various scams via phone and internet.

Social Connect Hits the Seas!

A group of seniors from Social Connect took their connections to the sea, embarking on a memorable cruise on the Holland America Line in February. The group visited Half Moon Cay Island , Bahamas (private island), Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Cayman Island and Cozumel, Mexico. For many seniors, it was their first time experiencing a cruise, an opportunity made possible through Social Connect. Special thanks to Dr. Claudette Holloway for making this incredible journey a reality. The seniors had a fantastic time soaking up the sun, cruising the open waters, and coming together onboard the ship for a special Social Connect session.
